About stubborn body fat
For many people, no matter how much they exercise or how healthy their diet is, they will continue to have stubborn areas of fat on their body that they cannot get rid of. This can be extremely frustrating and getting rid of stubborn fat becomes more difficult as we get older. This is due to many factors, including the natural ageing process and the redistribution of fat towards the centre of our bodies (causing the so-called “pear shape”) and also due to hormonal changes as we age.
Interestingly, over the course of our lives the number of fat cells that we have in our bodies does not change. This is determined from early childhood and from then on, the number of fat cells is generally the same for the rest of our lives.
At various times during our lives as we gain and lose weight, all that happens is that these fat cells swell and shrink, so a common misconception is that when we lose weight we are losing fat cells; unfortunately we are not. They are simply shrinking, waiting for their next opportunity to swell again.
This is where body contouring comes in, to permanently remove or destroy fat cells.
What lifestyle factors are important in reducing stubborn body fat?
The most important factors are regular daily exercise and eating a healthy, balanced diet that is low in refined carbohydrates and sugars. Lean protein and healthy, unsaturated fats should be eaten in moderation and carbohydrates should be low glycemic index.
How can stubborn body fat be treated?
Obviously the first treatment of choice for stubborn fat is healthy eating and regular exercise. If a person is not regularly exercising and eating healthily, any other methods of stubborn fat treatment will be much less effective.
Beyond exercise and healthy eating, pockets of stubborn fat can be treated invasively through surgery or non-invasively through other forms of effective body contouring.
Surgery may compose of liposuction or more invasive surgery such as tummy tuck or other surgeries to excise fat. These invasive methods carry the inherent risk of major surgery and also the anaesthetic risk.
Non-invasive body contouring comes in many forms such as radiofrequency, ultrasound, cryo-lipolysis (fat freezing) and laser lipolysis (fat heating with laser).
It is important for any patient to review the scientific evidence behind any treatment as many treatments are heavily marketed and only a few are FDA and TGA-approved; this means that there is scientific evidence from studies that they are safe and effective. Always ask your healthcare practitioner about this.
Why is there a trend towards non-invasive treatments for stubborn body fat?
Non-invasive body contouring is one of the biggest growth areas in the cosmetic area, especially in Asia and Australia. This is because of new, scientifically-proven technology that is now available that offers true “lunchtime treatments” that is both safe and effective.
More and more people nowadays are also time-poor and do not want to have to take time off from work, family or social lives, something that surgery or liposuction would certainly require.
People want safe, effective treatments, that are non-invasive and require no downtime.
